Well, both the Volks Rose and Bluefairy Xiao arrived and are in good shape. Rose needs some cleaning up and she was sent unstrung, so that saves me a step--I can clean her up, sand the seams, and restring her. The face-up is original but seems to be in good shape. Just need to take a day to sort out my modding materials and get to work. Her new name with be Sakura. I usually use Japanese names for my SD-sized Volks dolls and was shocked that I didn't have a Sakura already, as I do love that name.

The Bluefairy Xiao 1st arrived earlier this week. I was worried because of the absolutely frigid temperatures, but she came through okay. For a doll her age (she's from 2007), she is in fantastic shape, and the custom face-up by Mingyi (Deadly Nightshade) is stunning. I will eventually take her apart to sand her seams, but otherwise she's in great shape. I named her Kaisu after a doll collecting friend of mine from Finland (Xaya), who happens to have a number of the Bluefairy Xiao/Lin sculpts. They are so stylish that any time I think of Xiao, I'm reminded of her, and I thought her name is really pretty.

Wonder of wonders, the light was right today for me to take a few pictures of Kaisu! Photography is one of my favorite hobbies within the doll hobby, and I haven't had much time to indulge lately.

Kaisu

I really like this look with the blonde hair. Her eyes, which came with her, are Enchanted Doll Urethane ED #29 (a sort of hazel green), 16mm. Not a color I would have thought to pick myself, but they go very well with her, so I think she'll keep them.

Kaisu

The seller included a dress from Volks, and Luts shoes that matched it perfectly.

Kaisu

This was the seller's default wig for her, a very cute bob (also Leekeworld, I think?). The hair color goes very well with her eyes.

Kaisu

And the default Bluefairy Bang Sauvage black wig.

Kaisu

And the oldstyle Bluefairy default school outfit. I think they changed it in 2009 or so? I have a few dolls that came with this one. Not the original white socks but the black tights work well with the look.

I'm absolutely delighted with her, and look forward to more photo sessions, maybe with some of my other Xiao dolls!

Oh, the agony of waiting! I have an opportunity to pick up a Bluefairy Xiao and Minoruworld Junior Clare for a very reasonable price, but am waiting to hear back from the seller. She's getting out of the hobby and priced the dolls to sell. The Xiao is a 1st Xiao, a sculpt that I love, while Clare is one of those Junior sculpts that I always meant to get and never did, then Bluefairy discontinued her earlier this year. (Minoruworld merged with Bluefairy several years ago.)

What is better is that these are the classic bodies, not the newer ones with double-joints. And the seller seems to be a collector like me, who kept the dolls in boxes a lot. That would mean less work for me trying to fix them/clean them up.

Since the seller is leaving the hobby, she's including clothing, wigs, and shoes with the sale, so the price is excellent. That is, if she agrees to sell to me. So we'll have to see.

I'm hoping this goes through. I've lost nearly 100 lbs and wanted to reward myself with something special.

Bob ended up sleeping in late, so I ran some errands (no ice on the roads, hallelujah!). I recently found a Bluefairy Kyle (bjd ball-jointed doll) on Ebay for cheap, and it arrived today. Kyle is typically a male sculpt, but this one was on a female "blossom" body (ie more mature than the usual girl body).

The seller did a crappy packing job, and it turns out she didn't disclose some of the damage to the doll. Fortunately, I've been collecting Bluefairy dolls for several years and have had to do repairs before. And since Bob was sleeping in, I went ahead and took the doll apart to repair and clean.

I'll link to my doll blog with some pictures later. I took a few as I was setting up (and to document the damage), but once I get into working, I don't have time to stop and take photos. In two places, the o-hook (which are the hooks screwed into the hands, feet, and head) had come out. One was stuck halfway up the calf of the doll. The other had come off the headcap.

Fortunately, I've run into both situations before, so I was able to retrieve the errant o-hooks (with patience) and screw them back in, this time with superglue to set them.

There was also some undisclosed chipping in a few places--which shows the previous owner didn't take very good care of the doll. Again, I've run into that with other used dolls. The chips can be sanded smooth. There was one small crack at the bottom of the leg joint, but as I am not very hard on my dolls, I didn't want to have to patch and sand that sucker.

Most BJD's have seam lines, from when the resin is cast. Some companies, like Volks, will sand down seams (for a fee). Some companies used to just do it. Most of the Bluefairy dolls I've seen have not had their seams sanded. I learned how to do that a few years ago, so I decided to go ahead and sand this doll's seams, since I was smoothing out those rough spots anyway.

At some point, the doll had gotten wet and the elastic was moldy, with a couple of the s-hooks rusting. Ick. All that had to go, but I keep aside some replacement elastic/s-hooks for restringing dolls.

Since I was doing this anyway, and I had to leave some time for things to dry, I took out another doll I'd been intending to work on (poor Sophie has been in pieces for at least a year), and sanded her seams as well.

So all's well that ends well. Both dolls are back together. The new doll (I named her Vivian), didn't come with eyes, but I tend to keep extra around, so found her a set of eyes. I actually didn't intend to use these eyes (they came in a grab bag, and I don't care for dark sclera), but for narrow-eyed Vivian, these worked.

Lemon Jelly Eye Shop Magical eyes 18mm

(It's a dark sclera with a light, glittering iris. And it seems to work for her.)

Pictures tomorrow-it was too dark to get proper ones by the time I was done. I'll try to get some tomorrow. All told, it took me about 8 hours to clean and repair both dolls. I'm really proud of how they came out! And the time flew by.

One of the reasons I like the bjd hobby is that I don't feel the weight of expectations. I can do whatever I want customizing these dolls, no documentation, no answering to anyone else (except maybe Bob for the cost), and at the end I have something pretty.

Thus went my day off. I'm a bit sore from working so intensely, but also very relaxed. :-)

This dress came with a lot of doll clothes that I bought last summer. It was handmade and rather poorly sewn. There was a partly open seam on the bodice and the skirt was gathered unevenly. But I figured these things could be easy enough to fix.

More details, with pics )

The finished product, with boots and a pair of bloomers from another dress.

I'm still not happy with the sleeves, but after ripping and resetting them three times, I decided to just leave it. Obviously, I need more practice with inset sleeves! At least the skirt is finally gathered evenly--I did a simple gather, half on each side, and made sure it was evenly distributed. Pleats might have looked better, but the original skirt just didn't have enough material in it. I'm rather meh about how the lace was on the edge of the sleeves, but because of the way it was sewn on, I could not rip it out without damaging it too badly to reuse, so I just left it.

I also need to practice more with invisible hem stitches. There was a bit of a challenge with finishing the seams because they were so small, but it's not so bad when done by hand. Part of me would like to get a serger, but I can't see that I'd use it enough to justify the cost. Unless I found a good-quality used serger inexpensively, it's just not worth it.

This is Taira Chiharu, my newest doll and yet my oldest. Someone put her up for sale on Den of Angels for a really reasonable price. The seller said she was from 2007, but the mold was discontinued in 2005-2006. I was interested in her because she is an original mold Xiao. I like the sculpt a lot because she has a bit of a smile, whereas the newer Xiao sculpts are frowning. She has the older resin, which is a slightly different tone than the newer Bluefairy dolls.

She's a charming doll. Not completely set on the character yet, except that she's a Japanese-American from California, very cute and cheerful.

I posted about this on my regular blog, but forgot to cross-post here.

Name: Konoe Atsushi
Nickname: none
Age: 14
Type: Blue Fairy Tiny Fairy Who's Xiao? WS
Faceup: Sour_Dotz
Eyes: turquoise 16mm glass, from DOA marketplace
Hair: Black, sometimes silver
Orientation: Far East
Likes: long walks, electronics, tinkering with things
Dislikes: people who talk too quickly, having to go to Mass, not being at the top of the class
Personality: Atsushi is a bit cold, but is kind underneath.  He takes things way too seriously.
History: Atsushi is originally from Kyoto.  His family is quite distinguished.  However, he was kidnapped two years ago, and although there was a successful rescue, his parents decided that for his safety, it would be better if he were in a more secure environment.  The school was recommended to them.  Since his arrival last year, he has worked hard to improve his English, but he still has a lot to learn.  He rooms with fellow Japanese student Shigemori Isao, and the two of them study with a Japanese teacher from Miskatonic University for a half day and are in regular classes for the other half.

Atsushi篤 means "sincere, genuine", Konoe近衛 is "imperial guards".

Got some final pics from the face-up artist (sour_dotz on DOA) for Atsushi! He looks great (yet understated--I wanted him to fit in well with the default Bluefairy look). Got the artist paid off, so I'm looking forward to him coming home soon!

The long-waited-for Xiao doll finally arrived today! He was in very good shape and the seller included some extras, including a pair of blue glass eyes...nice ones, too. Not sure if he'll use them or if they'll end up with one of the other dolls as yet.

He doesn't have a face-up, so I'm trying to pin down what kind of coloring I want on him. The name that keeps coming to me is Konoe Atsushi, so that'll be what I call him for now. The doll's face shape/eye shape does seem more Asian than the others.

Here he is in a fantasy blue wig that I almost never use. I thought it would look nice with the eyes, and it does.

And as a blonde. The advantage of light-colored wigs is that they don't stain as much (although I store my dolls in boxes, sans wigs, so staining usually isn't a problem anyway!) but I just don't know yet. I may need to switch out his eyes with another color and see how that goes. Frankly, I gotta get this decided before I can start finding a face-up artist to paint him!

It'll take some time to decide how he'll fit in, but I think Atsushi will do just fine. Once I get a face-up on him...the lack of make-up is surprisingly irritating!
